{"id":47688,"date":"2022-08-10T17:23:09","date_gmt":"2022-08-10T17:23:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marnix.nl\/homepage\/welkom\/?p=47688"},"modified":"2022-08-10T17:23:19","modified_gmt":"2022-08-10T17:23:19","slug":"the-end-of-advice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marnix.nl\/homepage\/welkom\/2022\/08\/10\/the-end-of-advice\/","title":{"rendered":"The end of advice."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>I guess most blogs contain some sort of advice.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018What to do when, or if\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018How to deal with\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Ten things that\u2019ll help you when this or that happens\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018How I overcame\u2026.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We love that shit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we could, I&#8217;m almost sure, we\u2019d generously pay to have advice drip into our veins all day long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advice is a practical form of hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advice is logical and repeatable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advice is literally everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And still, STILL, the world is filled with piles of miserable people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what&#8217;s that about?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The thing is: advice works very well for building a medieval wall in the garden, tending to your sunflowers, getting around in rural Spain, or cooking an exotic Sunday roast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it does almost nothing when it comes to our deepest wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know this for a fact because I\u2019ve gobbled up advice ever since I can remember.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My bookshelves and iPads and computers are filled with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My fucking head is filled with it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And every single day I talk to people who are totally lost and confused because they know everything there is to know and more, their heads are heavy with shit they&#8217;ve learned, but there\u2019s hardly ever any sustainable, reliable happiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And STILL, they want to know more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s also one of the biggest challenges in coaching: most people believe that they\u2019ve learned and tried everything out there, and they\u2019re convinced that their roaring intellect is still essential for getting it done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, this creates the most amazing, entertaining \u2018fights\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I love that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This innocent, human, furious, and arrogant mind that has led to nothing but misery and hopelessness and lack, keeps hanging in there, making its erratic moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So why don\u2019t I just give them tips and tricks and recommended books?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it really true that they&#8217;ll leave the session without homework?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do I REALLY discourage them to write stuff down during the conversations?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I love that too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The disbelief when they hear there\u2019s really no hard work involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The confusion when I tell them it\u2019s more about losing a lot of constipating, useless crap, than adding anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The frustration and temperament at the beginning, the urge to debate and be right in the middle, and the peace of mind in the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When people look at me when we quit our sessions, with a lazy smile and eyes stoned from life, I sometimes ask them if they&#8217;d still like some advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only to fuck them around a bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I love that too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Photo by @jaygame, for Unsplash)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I guess most blogs contain some sort of advice. \u2018What to do when, or if\u2026\u2019 \u2018How to deal with\u2026\u2019 \u2018Ten things that\u2019ll help you when this or that happens\u2026\u2019 \u2018How I overcame\u2026.\u2019 We love that shit.
