{"id":46641,"date":"2022-04-28T14:39:10","date_gmt":"2022-04-28T14:39:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marnix.nl\/homepage\/welkom\/?p=46641"},"modified":"2022-04-28T14:39:14","modified_gmt":"2022-04-28T14:39:14","slug":"how-to-accept","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marnix.nl\/homepage\/welkom\/2022\/04\/28\/how-to-accept\/","title":{"rendered":"How to accept."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>\u2018Just accept it\u2019, we hear.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because it is what it is, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve tried the fighting and the resisting and the blaming, but it only got worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now we\u2019re tired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fed up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The thing that seemed so important, so personal, so deeply unfair, suddenly and somehow becomes transparent, less heavy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acceptance has happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But how?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accepting doesn\u2019t seem to be a thing we literally and purposefully do, like taking out the trash, snapping our fingers, or singing under the shower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It doesn\u2019t seem to be an activity, something that is up to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Today I\u2019m going to accept this.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what IS it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To me, acceptance looks like a moment where a belief, an idea, some thought that really meant something and had a lot of significance in our life, loses its importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s like a shift where you realize that it doesn\u2019t serve you anymore to keep chewing on it, and at that moment it drops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a graceful, sobering change in perspective, or like a space shuttle losing a fuel tank that has become obsolete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason why I\u2019m sure it must be something like that is that I\u2019ve spent hours and hours and hours trying to deliberately accept stuff, and it simply didn\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I tried to accept romantic break-ups, but the pain just got worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I tried to accept the excess fat around my waist, but that made me incredibly nervous (diet and workouts did the trick).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I tried to accept that I can&#8217;t force life to do what I want, but still hope it does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I tried to accept SO MANY different things that made me crazy, but it hardly ever turned out to be a very powerful undertaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accepting stuff not only seems to entail some sort of spontaneous shift, but it\u2019s also part of a process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like forgetting things is a process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can\u2019t forget by saying you want to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We simply don\u2019t control the Thought Creation Machine like that, so whatever it is you forget for a while, there\u2019s always a chance it will pop up again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acceptance is a bit like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A process AND a point where stuff simply shifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And there\u2019s something else about it, something that feels just a little bit less random and out of our control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently it seems to me that instead of deliberately letting go, accepting is more about not holding on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like a bunch of bright helium balloons traveling up the sky after you forgot to hold them tight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe this all sounds contradictory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe life just IS incredibly contradictory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But one day, I\u2019ll totally accept that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Photo by @denisseleon, for Unsplash)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2018Just accept it\u2019, we hear.
