{"id":46390,"date":"2022-03-01T10:39:16","date_gmt":"2022-03-01T10:39:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marnix.nl\/homepage\/welkom\/?p=46390"},"modified":"2022-03-01T10:39:19","modified_gmt":"2022-03-01T10:39:19","slug":"the-secret-power-of-dopamine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marnix.nl\/homepage\/welkom\/2022\/03\/01\/the-secret-power-of-dopamine\/","title":{"rendered":"The secret power of dopamine."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Most of us have heard about dopamine.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s generally considered to be the \u2018reward chemical\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We talk about \u2018dopamine hits\u2019 like little injections of happiness and bliss that we receive from doing or taking specific things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But dopamine actually has dozens of functions in the body, and one of the lesser-known applications is extremely important when it comes to changing habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because dopamine is also \u2018the expectation hormone\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s what sets us up for a specific activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the warm, positive, and exciting feeling we get when thinking about a substance or activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before anything happens, before we even surrender to a habit, it already feels good and deeply enticing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the craving part of addiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where longing for something becomes an overwhelming experience, a delicious taster of what\u2019s to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A promise that feels really good (although in addiction it\u2019s hardly ever fulfilled).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s in that unique function where dopamine can help us out tremendously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You see, I have changed many habits in my life that weren\u2019t conducive to my health, so I know about hanging in there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are different reasons why I was able to do that and keep doing it, why I was capable of resisting the contradictory urge to indulge in whatever I desperately wanted to quit, but one of them has been especially important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that was this specific aspect of dopamine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have learned to use the feeling of expectation as fuel for change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have mastered the art of pain and resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I can turn dread and hesitation into inspiration, and take it from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whenever I feel resistance in adopting new habits, whenever my mind starts telling me to give up (because our brains don\u2019t appreciate change, at all), whenever I \u2018just don\u2019t feel like doing something\u2019, I acknowledge it as a future victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s exciting, in a weird way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pain is actually sweet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s invigorating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the first sign of change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And even though it doesn\u2019t particularly feel good by itself, it motivates me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have learned to translate this negative feeling into a positive notion, into a necessary power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because I know that pain and boredom and tiredness and all the other objections your body and mind can create are absolutely essential for growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This kind of pain, this particular sense of resistance, is the prerequisite for change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which means I am already feeling the change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pain is change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Change is good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So pain is good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>THIS pain is good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Growing pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you can see it this way, somewhere along the line your experience will get sweetened by the production of dopamine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indulge in this feeling of expectation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use it, enjoy it, savor it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pain IS expectation, and it will start to feel good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NOW you are definitely on track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Photo by @sxoxm, for Unsplash)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most of us have heard about dopamine.
