{"id":32529,"date":"2021-06-27T19:52:59","date_gmt":"2021-06-27T19:52:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marnix.nl\/homepage\/welkom\/?p=32529"},"modified":"2021-06-27T19:52:59","modified_gmt":"2021-06-27T19:52:59","slug":"how-to-write-a-bestseller","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marnix.nl\/homepage\/welkom\/2021\/06\/27\/how-to-write-a-bestseller\/","title":{"rendered":"How to write a bestseller."},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Let me tell you how to write a non-fiction bestseller.<\/h3>\n<p>Of course the book is about happiness.<\/p>\n<p>Happiness might be the most elusive, precious thing on the planet, and we always try to catch it and hold on to it, so have a go.<\/p>\n<p>Call it something like \u201899 rules for lasting happiness\u2019, \u2018Forever Happy\u2019 or \u2018The 50 Faces of Happiness\u2019 (which allows for the use of smiley\u2019s on the cover).<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and people LOVE numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Then make sure to include \u2018cutting edge scientific research\u2019 on happiness (with percentages and demographics and names of famous universities).<\/p>\n<p>Add interviews with happy people from around the world, and extract the traits and activities they have in common.<\/p>\n<p>Also include some exercises (visualization is a safe bet, just like mindfulness and some affirmations) and a bunch of blank gratitude pages.<\/p>\n<p>Sprinkle it with spiritual quotes by spiritual giants (\u2018If you want to receive, you have to let go\u2019, stuff like that).<\/p>\n<p>Make the chapters short.<\/p>\n<p>And put it all together.<\/p>\n<p>Voil\u00e0!<\/p>\n<p>You have created a book with a lot of safe selling potential.<\/p>\n<p>But what if you want to take it a bit further?<\/p>\n<p>If you choose to go the extra mile (and still keep it safe), pick a specific angle and milk it.<\/p>\n<p>People think they\u2019re missing out all the time, so introducing the specific happiness formula of a particular group of human beings (or animals, or plants, or planets), will always make them eager to dive in.<\/p>\n<p>Write a book about \u2018The Inuit Way of Happiness\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Or create and introduce \u2018Hot and Happy: the Enlightening Joy of Being a Firefighter\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Or write \u2018Baby Bliss\u2019, about \u2018What we can learn about happiness from little children\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Or completely ignore the world of humans, and look for an alternative.<\/p>\n<p>What about \u2018Happy Cats (and 100 things we can learn from them)\u2019 or dogs?<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The Perfection of Pandas?&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Maybe \u2018Happy Trees: The Awesomeness of Oaks\u2019?<\/p>\n<p>Or take fruit (\u2018Sweet Joy\u2019).<\/p>\n<p>Clouds.<\/p>\n<p>Stars.<\/p>\n<p>Or even Nothing (\u2018Why Doing Nothing Will Get You Everything!\u2019)<\/p>\n<p>There you go, that\u2019s it.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve got the recipe, time to do the work.<\/p>\n<p>Now you may think \u2018If you know so much about bestsellers, Marnix, why don\u2019t you take your own advice and write one!\u2019, and that is a fair question.<\/p>\n<p>The reason is: I can\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Just like I can\u2019t be a successful mainstream motivational speaker, even if I could perfectly mimic everything that gig requires (which, technically, I could).<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t because I can\u2019t do things I don\u2019t believe in.<\/p>\n<p>I just can\u2019t write or sell formulaic stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I am so morally perfect, but, well, I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<p>I just can\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>It would probably hurt like fuck to do so.<\/p>\n<p>But if you can: go for it and enjoy!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Just remember to get me a slice of the pie&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(Photo by @socialcut, for Unsplash)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let me tell you how to write a non-fiction bestseller.
