{"id":31867,"date":"2021-05-25T10:03:01","date_gmt":"2021-05-25T10:03:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marnix.nl\/homepage\/welkom\/?p=31867"},"modified":"2021-05-25T13:11:05","modified_gmt":"2021-05-25T13:11:05","slug":"knowing-it-but-not-getting-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marnix.nl\/homepage\/welkom\/2021\/05\/25\/knowing-it-but-not-getting-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Knowing it (but not getting it)."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Let&#8217;s talk about The Big Confusion.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The thing that really messes people up, again and again and again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which leads us into the Bermuda Triangle of human behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that thing is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Understanding it, but not getting it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having an intellectual, factual grasp of something, but not feeling the implications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The difference between head and heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s where the mind says \u2018Yeah, sure, I know, but\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the consequences are dire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know that smoking is really bad for us, but\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know that worrying doesn\u2019t really help or solves anything, but\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know that what other people think about us is only ever about them, but\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know that we do stupid things when we\u2019re angry, but\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know that rain can\u2019t really cause bad moods, but\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know we can&#8217;t possibly know everything there is to know, but&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know that one glass leads to two and more, but\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know that money doesn\u2019t make us happy, but\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know, we know, we KNOW!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we get lost all the time, nevertheless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know, but we do the same stupid things anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, because knowing is the clean domain of the intellect, and knowing is easy and straightforward when there\u2019s nothing at stake, when life is fairly safe and stable and predictable, when we\u2019re living in theory more than reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But very often we\u2019re not in that steady place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And what we do and don\u2019t do in life is way less reasonable than we imagine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Life is where urge trumps reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where old habits blow away shiny New Year\u2019 s resolutions just like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where short term almost always wins over long term (because the brain LOVES short term and it will make you feel that preference).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where we get confused and in doubt and the nice little well-organized facts we\u2019ve stacked somewhere, seem to get lost in the mist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again and again and again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The direct experience of discomfort and restlessness gets us out of balance, which makes people revert to and rely on the subconscious stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The stupid, unhelpful and destructive actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The habits that numb us out for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The stuff we inherited from our caretakers because we didn\u2019t know any better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The coping mechanisms, the fear based crap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The activities that even made sense, somewhere in time, but now hold you back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are unaware of its erratic nature, the mind can easily mess you up and confuse you, which opens up the dungeon of habitual ghosts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why we know so much but still get confused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the only way out?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But you probably already knew that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Photo by @readerpreneur, for Unsplash)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let&#8217;s talk about The Big Confusion.
