There\u2019s no such thing as a<\/em> drinking problem<\/em>.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Or a drug problem.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Or any other problem that is somehow connected to things we do in ways that are unhealthy and compulsive and obsessive.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Even though there are many activities we can get hooked on in a really fucked up and undermining way, they are not the problem.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
None of them.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
They are just dubious, temporary ways to deal with what we REALLY fear:<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Discomfort.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
We can\u2019t stand it.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
We run away from it.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
We drown it in whatever we can get our hands on.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
But our addiction of choice is not our choice.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
There\u2019s not a single addict in the world who wants to be addicted.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
What they want, what we ALL want, is just to feel good.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
To feel safe, to feel whole, to experience peace of mind, or at least realize that it\u2019s just around the corner instead of forever out of reach.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
We want to be liberated from the incessant criticism of the mind, from the pain of our imagination.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
And the habits we call addictions are just clumsy (and often really effective) ways to get there.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
They are distractions.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Diversions.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Temporary walls of separation.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
But they are not the problem.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Truly understanding this will lead to healing.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
It can show us the real, ultimate solution for our problems.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Because it\u2019s not really about quitting the habit:<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
it\u2019s about learning to be uncomfortable.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
About resilience.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
About weathering the storm.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
And by doing so, by starting to feel the vivid peace we try to accomplish by our addictions, we can trust and let go.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
There\u2019s no substitute for being high on life.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
It\u2019s the thing we are all looking for.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
And it doesn\u2019t have to be a problem.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
